Adventures in Cleansing

Lately, my eating habits have been less than awesome. I have been inhaling sugar like it is vitamin C and treating myself to midnight snacks of lamb burgers and French fries. This type of snacking is a recipe for disaster. Having too much of anything will likely result in both your mind and body feeling slightly off. However, that result is especially apparent when you are eating mass quantities of Oreos or chocolate peanut butter. Monday through Friday my diet is filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and a treat here or there. It is the weekend that gets me every time. After about a month of feeling lethargic and uncomfortable, I decided that it is time for damage control: Dr. Frank Lipman’s Cleanse Program.

Dr. Lipman’s Cleanse is a two-week detox filled with three shakes per day, light lunches, early dinners, and pills as dietary supplements. I primarily chose this cleanse because it is not about depriving your body of delicious meals consisting of solid food. This cleanse is about eliminating all of the common irritants in a diet such as sugar, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, gluten, and wheat. These are typically the culprits that hinder your detox system from working smoothly.

Game Plan:

First shake early in the morning
Second shake mid-morning
Light lunch with pills
Afternoon shake
Light dinner with pills

Dr. Lipman provides a lengthy shopping list of approved foods free of the irritants listed above. I basically have free reign to mix and match any of these foods for lunch and dinner within reasonable portions.

Again, this cleanse is not about starving myself in order to lose weight. I would simply like to press my body’s reset button and feel my mind reap the benefits as well. Ultimately, I would like to I feel more energized, focused, and perceptive.  I am definitely looking forward to the changes that will occur throughout the entire process. Although, my fingers and toes are crossed that I can avoid visions of butter pecan ice cream and Babycakes cupcakes while lying in savasana at Strala.

I will check in halfway through the cleanse with a progress report (hopefully cheat free). After the fourteen days are up, I will stop in again to give an overview of the outcomes and my thoughts on the experience. Stay tuned!

    Dude, how do the shakes taste? I hate the taste of some protein shakes, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to stomach something like this, but I really want to try it! Damn cognitive dissonance!!!

      Sarah – the shakes are pretty tasty! I use almond milk and a dash of cinnamon in them. The great thing about the shakes is that you can add approved fruit or spices to adjust them to your taste. Think about it! :)

    I definitely need to cleanse. I’ve done the Clean Program twice and have had great success with it. I love the energy, the way my skin looks, and how I lose that bloating we all get. So fast forward two months from my last cleanse and I’m drinking two or three diet Cokes a day…I know they’re awful for me, but I don’t drink tea or coffee. Any suggestions on just eliminating caffeine from the diet?

    Hi Cory – caffeine is a tough one, I know. I was up to 2 or 3 coffees a day! Maybe try and remember what it felt like when you were cleansing and caffeine free. Try swapping out diet cokes for green juice! It’s crazy how much energy those juices can give you. No need to start cold-turkey – try one diet coke and one green juice per day and so forth.
