Ask Strala: I’m too stiff, what should I do?

Question

I’m really stiff for my morning yoga. Am I doing something wrong? Should I wait for my body to “wake up” a little before practicing?

Practicing yoga, learning to breathe, and de-stressing my body and mind has done some amazing things for me. I don’t want to be making a mistake that will cost me later on by working and stretching muscles that need a little more time adjusting in the morning. Is it normal to feel a lot tighter in the mornings?

 

Answer

You’re not alone here! Your muscles just spent the night not moving much, so of course it takes some time – and some moving – to get things working easily again.

 

Let your yoga follow how you feel.  Rather than worry about stretching and forcing into some pictures of poses, or into what you can do at night, just get into your body, how it feels, right now.

 

Make it more about moving than posing.  Get every inch of your body moving easily with every other inch. Move into your body right where it is, feel your way around, and respond to how you feel.

 

Practicing this will give you quite a lot more than practicing poses. Have fun with it.
