As the weather gets colder, we are outside (at least in NYC) less and less. As a result, we experience less sunlight, which can lead to Vitamin D deficiency, tiredness, and the general blues. My first go-to mood uplifters are: going upside down (what better way to flip your perspective?), yoga and meditation, but another thing that I have found that helps a ton over the colder, less light-filled months is Full Spectrum Light Bulbs.
They are supposed to replicate sunlight at noon, and whether it is a placebo effect of not, they seem to really perk me up. According to research, these bulbs reduce levels of melatonin and cortisol hormones in your body, thus reducing stress. If I can make it to Strala if I start feeling down, that is my first response, and the best solution, but for the rest of the day, these bulbs can’t hurt.
Do you feel down or tired when the days get shorter? What are your favorite ways to combat the winter blues? If all else fails, you can join me on my yoga / surf retreat to El Salvador in February!! Stay happy
xx,
