Heidi’s Savasana Helper

I love a great home yoga practice: more often than not, it is exactly what I need, and makes me feel amazing.  A home practice is awesome any time that I can’t make it to Strala: early in the morning to start my day, at night to help me wind down, or anytime in between as a great re-boot.  While, there are lots of things I love about practicing yoga at the studio (being surrounded by amazing people and uber-positive energy), the thing that I miss the most when I do a home practice, as opposed to one at Strala, is that yummy savasana neck massage.  I mean, really, what feels better than that?!

My neck has been a trouble spot for me ever since it was injured in a car accident when I was 18, so having someone touch my neck in a way that lengthens it is absolute heaven!

Enter: the Still Point Inducer.  This little piece of foam claims to: relieve headaches, ease chronic musculoskeletal pain, enhance immune system efficiency, provide deep relaxation and help reduce stress, and facilitate your body’s self-correcting abilities, among other things.  The still point inducer was “inspired by Osteopathic Physician John E. Upledger, developer of CranioSacral Therapy, to relieve pain and discomfort by inducing a “still point,” a pause in the craniosacral pulse which strengthens the central nervous system.”  While that is all great and scientific sounding; for me, it’s enough to know that when it  comes time to relax at the end of my home practice, and I prop this under my head, my body relaxes, and my neck and I feel great.

Still Point Inducer

Some people love to prop themselves up on bolsters or blankets, but I love my Still Point Inducer. It’s not going to heal my neck or back, or anything like that, but what it is, is that little something extra that makes my at-home savasana super-special.  Sometimes, it’s the little things :)

What is your favorite prop or tool that helps you totally let go in savasana?  Let me know! Happy Relaxing!

xx,

Heidi

I thought exactly the same ! Great article, btw.

I see a person who does cranial sacral massage (which is wonderful by the way), and she told me I could make the equivalent by putting 2 tennis balls into a sock and knotting it tightly against the balls. This creates a still point inducer as well and costs less. Just thought I’d share that for those of you who can’t find the still point inducer or who want a cheaper alternative.

It does feel great to use! Enjoyed the post Heidi!

You can also use masking tape to join two tennis balls together. This is good for the neck and can also be rolled along the back while on the floor or standing up using the wall. It realllly gets into those tension-filled spots. The same goes for a golf ball on tight or cramped feet. Proceed with caution as this bad boy is pretty intense!
