How You Practice is What You Get

If you think you’re practicing something in yoga or tai chi or fitness that’s different from what you do the rest of your day, you’re not.

It might look different, these positions, these exercises, from sitting at a desk or going to meetings. It might feel like a change of pace, change of focus, change of heart rate. But this isn’t change. It might just barely scratch the surface of what you’re looking for.

Because what’s constant, always, is you. How you do what you do. The strategies you use, the habits that carry you. So when you get to yoga, there you are. Trying to bring one disconnected, disobedient part of you at a time into line, going to war with your challenges. More stress, more disconnection. And we’re supposed to pretend we are at peace, while we go to war with our selves.

What we’re doing in our selves, to our selves, is perfectly reflected in the world. All the unsustainability. All the conflict, aggression. disconnection, war.

What we need isn’t yoga. Isn’t tai chi, the gym, or anything else we do for an hour each day at best. Because this hour will always be exactly how we are, all the time.

What we need is a practice that’s practiced all the time, in all the hours, in all the places. Which carries us into a different world, where we are sustainable, connected, harmonious and at peace in our selves, in how we care for and get around in our selves. So this becomes what’s perfectly reflected in the world around us. A very different world.

Yoga can help. Tai chi can help. Anything you love can help, running walking swimming climbing talking eating connecting creating sharing helping living being. It all helps, when we see it’s all the same, in how we are. And we put our practice on how we are, all the time.

It’s not about yoga or any other one thing. If it is, it’s just a cult. A new distraction. If you want to change, it has to be about you, not about the other thing. Something bigger comes through you in how you are, everywhere. The world changes here.
