Shiatsu is known as a traditional Japanese bodywork method, based on the principles of acupuncture. It has evolved into an innovative healing modality that incorporates movement, meditation, and connection.
Incredibly effective for the treatment of common injuries, as well as chronic pain and disabilities, shiatsu skills provide a great complement to yoga practice and leadership.
How does shiatsu work? Traditional shiatsu offered a rigid set of guidelines: for each problem, there is a set of exact steps to follow, in the same way, every time. While this might work some of the time, human systems and conditions are often sufficiently complex to stump fixed rules; modern medicine has had great difficulty with chronic pain and injuries for this reason. As shiatsu has evolved, its approach has become more sophisticated, and more simply reflective of what we know now about neuroplasticity and our overall incredible capacity to heal. Shiatsu works to activate and support our bodies’ natural systems, by creating the conditions that are optimal for healing.
Shiatsu doesn’t function as transmission from an authority figure to a student, but as people supporting people. Rather than fixing a patient, shiatsu enables the giver to activate and support the natural healing processes within the receiver. This requires a blend of traditional techniques, along with connected intuition in the practitioner. When you have something in you, it becomes something you can give.
Space and ease in your body and mind can be shared to support others, and create the conditions for growth, healing, health and happiness.
In our Shiatsu 4-Weekend Training, you’ll learn how to use your breath and awareness to contact the vital acupuncture points and channels of energy (sometimes called qi or prana), to support and stimulate. We’ll practice the techniques and movement patterns that make this feel effortless and simple, as well as learn ways of understanding where and how our partners need us to touch them.
This hands-on training will give you the skill and confidence to give an effective treatment, and is appropriate for both beginners and those with bodywork experience. We will learn by playing, not working. Energy moves and healing happens when we’re enjoying ourselves, so come ready to have fun!
Sam Berlind is a shiatsu teacher and practitioner living in NYC. While studying Comparative Religion and Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh in 1981, he began to practice Iyengar yoga. Sam continued to practice and teach yoga after moving to NYC. Eager to learn more about the relationship between the healing properties of yoga and traditional Asian medicine, he studied with Wataru Ohashi. He began teaching in 1987, and has since taught in NYC, Omega Institute, and throughout the US and Europe. Sam also teaches enhancement workshops and seminars based on his study of Feldenkrais Method, Gestalt therapy, Zen Shiatsu, TCM, and martial arts
