Making Your Own Yoga Makes Yoga for Everyone

Yoga can bring people together. It can also divide people. Yoga can make people radiantly healthy and happy. It can also make people less healthy and less capable in their lives. For people to come together – to be healthy, happy, capable creators in their own lives – we need to believe that we can come together and create together as beautifully unique individuals. One size doesn’t fit all, and we don’t need rules and discipline to take this rebellion out of us! Diversity is a good thing.

Making anyone believe that there is a single correct way to do things – a single correct way to look, to pose, to live – and they need to go through you, your rules, to get it – is both psychologically and physically damaging.

In yoga, it has people pushing and struggling to get into pose goals, rather than feeling goals. People are pushing and struggling to force themselves into other people’s shapes, other people’s rules, other people’s lives. People are getting injured.

Worse – in all this straining to get into a “correct” way rather than finding their own way – people are practicing a way of being that says “I am not enough. I can’t find my own way in my own life.” They’re becoming less capable, less creative and intuitive, in building their own health and happiness.

So many people have been helped by yoga. Unfortunately, so many people have been hurt by yoga, too.

It’s not that people haven’t seen yoga, around the world. The problem is, they have seen it. They’ve seen that it’s not for them. They see people getting injured. They see it not helping people in their lives. They think it’s weird.

If half the time we went to doctors, we got hurt, we wouldn’t go to doctors any more.

Medicine is maintained as legitimate and broadly useful – to everyone, not just other doctors – through careful review. When harmful practices occur, the medical community doesn’t say “It’s all good.” The community works together to keep making things better, for everyone.

We can make yoga better, for everyone. The weird part, the harmful part, the part that isn’t useful, that isn’t the yoga that people can make for themselves. That isn’t the potential people can create for themselves. Yoga can do much better. We can do much better. It’s going to take work. But we can do it. Yoga is worth it. You’re worth it.

Together we can practice a way of being that has people saying “I am enough. I am the best person in the world to create my own beautiful shape, my own radiant health, my own inspiring life.”

Yoga can give you that, too. You give that to you, by making yoga your own.
