What You’ll Find Here

All our trainings and immersions have a unique curriculum that’s different from what’s covered in other 100, 200, and 500 hour programs. So what you learn here will be all new approaches, practices, and skill-sets, and makes a nice continuation from any previous studies with Strala or anywhere, without repetition.  You can begin with any program you like, including this Advanced Leadership Training, and you’ll always discover new ways to take good care of yourself, find harmony and ease in your body and life, and give this to the people you lead.

All this begins with you.  You’re always leading what have, how you are, in everything you do. It’s in how you get around a room, how you get around your life, that people follow. Much more than what you say.

And it’s wonderful, magical, when what you say agrees with what you do.  So we’re coming together here to share this as a practice.  To create the ground we all need to be how we want to be, first in our selves, and then for each other.

It’s not always complicated, but it’s also not easy.  It takes some slowing down, simplifying, subtracting the noise around us and in us.  From here we see where we are, and discover who it is we’re meant to be.  What are you good at?  What do you love?  It’s in these simple practices to find this, and grow stronger, more capable, in who we really are.

Get ready to make space in your life for inner peace, and unlock your energy for inspired creative power.

Who Is This For

Everything we do is designed to help people begin where they are, and develop the concrete practices that carry us where we want to go. So wherever you are is a perfect place to begin. This is true for all of our courses, including this 300+Hour Advanced Leadership Training.

The people joining our immersions and trainings are a wonderfully diverse and inspiring group. They range from 12 to over 80. They’re from dozens of countries worldwide. They are entrepreneurs and chief executives, professors and librarians, scientists and researchers, studio owners and fitness instructors, yoga teachers of every style, psychologists and physiotherapists, life and health coaches, doctors and lawyers. They are moms and dads, daughters and sons, and lifelong friends.

Some are relative beginners, some are long-time practicers and teachers.  Some want to teach, and some want to progress with their own yoga.  If you’re looking to teach yoga professionally, of course it’s good to have at least two years of your own practice experience first.  Wherever you are now is a great place to begin.  We’re lucky to have this rich diversity, it makes wonderful ground for real-world learning and sharing.

You might join for your profession, for teaching yoga or tai chi, or you might join just for you.  Whatever your purpose, we have this time to share a set of holistic skills and practices, that carry across your everything you do.

The unique set of skills you develop – for connecting with yourself and others, unblocking your energy, healing what needs healing and accomplishing challenge with ease – uncovers your ability to create the life you want, and be an inspiring leader to the people around you.

Curriculum for Week 1: Movement

How you are in your body, how you move through your life.

The first week focuses entirely on how we move, using the vocabularies of movement found in yoga, tai chi, qigong, and neigong, as well as your everyday human vocabulary – how you move across our whole life.

We’ll learn to identify and release stress and tension from our bodies and minds, unblock our energy, and return to what’s natural in each of us, in every situation.

We create a structure and practice that leads to breakthrough progress, in our way of being with our selves, and our way of moving through everything we do.

Curriculum for Week 2: Leadership

How you move, uplift, and inspire the people around you.

The second week focuses entirely on effective and inspiring leadership. We learn to create a way of being and moving, language and environment, that uplifts everyone around us to achieve progress in their own lives.

Of course this applies to leading in yoga and tai chi, as well as in every environment we touch.

Curriculum for Week 3: Healing

How to form a relationship with yourself and others, that elicits a wonderfully effective healing response.

The third week focuses wholly on diagnosis, self-care, and healing, through the vocabulary of Traditional Chinese and Japanese Medicine.

When we progress strongly with how we are, and how we move through and lead our own lives, there’s a prize. We become really effective at what we choose to do.

And one of the greatest prizes we can share, with ourselves and others, is the ability to heal – both what’s inside us, as well as all kinds of physical and emotional ailments that come from stress, disease, and injury.

Progressing to advanced capability, across every element of our Leadership Trainings

Explore: How we are in everything we do.  Taking care of yourself so you can take care of others.

Approach: Three Elements. How to create your best yoga, tai chi, healing, and life practices, through Breath, Softness, and Movement.

Softening: Our ability to soften is the beginning of everything. We’re so used to living under attack – hardening, flexing, straining – when things get hard. But we have a choice. When something is hard, you can soften. You can go easier in your body and mind. And from here, when things get hard, you’re learning to release tension, rather than pile it up. Which makes you, like water, invincible. We’ll practice this art across many contexts, and open a clear path to bring it fully into your life.

Breath Body Connection. Our movement is guided and fueled by our breath. Every inhale lifts and expands. Every exhale moves you further. This oceanic experience allows your body to go along for the ride, creating space for lightness and ease in your experience.

Feeling. Slow down and breath deep enough to feel, believe that what you feel is worth responding to, and respond. Your connection to feeling and intuition allows you to move into exactly what you need in each moment.  You’ll learn to be in alignment with yourself always, and feel good every step of the way.

Process: The Principles of Movement.  How to accomplish far more by using the movement principles of tai chi, across everything you do.  We begin with breath, connect to feeling, and move from center.  We’ll replace force and struggle with grace and coordination. With easy, whole-body-in-harmony movement, you can progress far beyond pose goals, and dive into the process of getting to know your body and mind.

Process: Responsive Movement. Once we have the structure of movement in our bodies, we can progress to Responsive Movement – a process of tuning in, self-diagnosis, and response. We learn to direct how we move precisely for what we need, unblocking energy where it’s blocked, discovering and removing the roadblocks that begin on the inside, bringing every part of us into harmony with every other part, and of course, healing on every level. When we re-open the conversation with our bodies, we can’t help but become our own best care-givers, optimally supporting all that’s unique about us, including our capacity to achieve what we dream. Amazing things happen here.

Practice: Yoga, Tai Chi, and Life. Yoga provides one vocabulary of movement that lets us connect with our bodies and minds, sense what we need, and respond. Tai chi provides a different and powerful vocabulary for new kinds of movement, to accomplish the same ends. Each moment is filled with the unexpected. When we become fluid in our movement, in our being, we’re more easily adaptable and responsive to the variety of challenges we face, and more able to accomplish what we desire.

Practice: Hard Things Easy.  It’s possible to get where you want to go by learning to drop the stress, and move easily through challenge. In fact, it’s not just possible. The best among us – the most inspirational of any human effort – has been achieved in this way. Nothing truly great has ever been achieved by working harder than needed. The impossible becomes possible only when we move gracefully, when we choose peace over aggression.

We’ll replace the self-limiting myth of no pain no gain, release stress and struggle from our bodies and minds, and use the principles of natural movement to make the impossible possible.  This becomes your way of being. It becomes how you move, how you create yourself, and the world around you.

Guiding: how to create an uplifting and enabling experience.  Your first responsibility is to take really good care of yourself.  What you have for yourself is what you have to give to others.  From here, we move through the best ways to orchestrate an amazing experience for everyone around you.  You’ll learn to lead people into their own freedom, intuition, creativity, and radiantly good health.

Healing: Touch and Support.  How to create a supportive, enabling, and healing relationship with yourself, and with others.  We’ll detail the core principles of safety, alignment, and practical anatomy, and provide an effective approach for healing of both acute injury and chronic pain.

Stress, Health & Nutrition.  We’ll explore your mind-body connection, the role of stress in disease, and techniques for releasing stress and activating your body’s Relaxation Response.  We’ll also explore the microbiome, and various nutritional strategies for curing ailments and enabling optimal health.

Leadership, Work, Life.  We’ll carry our practice of being, moving and healing into how you create the life you want.

Whatever goals you might have, how you feel when you get there is created by how you are along the way. In yoga, this is why challenges like handstands are best achieved not by practicing handstands – but by learning to move easily and comfortably in your body, through everything you do. Of course you can take a handstand by force – jumping and crashing, using muscle rather than coordination and grace. But this will never feel good. And the goal will lack meaning. We’ll have learned only to reach our goals by force, by not feeling good.

So of course there’s a better way, moving with grace and coordination, rather than by force and struggle. We learn something valuable about ourselves, moving this way. We learn that we can accomplish much more in our lives without stress and struggle than with it. We learn that we can get to wherever we want from wherever we are. And we learn that we can feel good, always.  It’s not about the handstand. It’s how you get where you’re going that creates what you have.

More Practice.  All of our trainings are very practical.  We’re not just talking about all of this – we’re going to do it together. So we have plenty of real class time for practice, exploration, and making what you want real in your everyday life.

Weekly Schedule and Degrees

This advanced program is designed so you can put the elements together in whatever combination works best for you.

Three Weeks : 500+Hour and 300+Hour Degree. This advanced program builds on top of our 200+Hour training, so you graduate with a 500+Hour Advanced Leadership degree. Or it can stand on its own as an advanced 300+Hour course.

Two Weeks : 400+Hour and 200+Hour Degree. This can serve as an alternative path to our 200+Hour training degree.  It can also provide a continuing 200 hours on top of your previous 200+Hour education, so you graduate with our 400+hour degree.

One Week : 300+Hour Degree and 100+Hour Component. You gain 100+Hours toward our 200+Hour degree, and if it’s on top of our 200+Hour degree, you graduate with a 300+Hour degree.  Also this qualifies as 100 hours of continuing education.

It’s perfectly fine to take all three weeks at once, or just one or two weeks at a time. As with our 200+hour program, putting these weeks together over time works well for people, so if it’s easier for your schedule, it’s just fine with us.

If you’re joining the full program, at least 270 hours are spent learning and practicing with our faculty. Outside of Intensive Hours other assignments can be done in your own time. Stay easy, have persistence and patience with yourself, and you’ll accomplish it all and more.

This is important work you’re choosing to do.
Helping people feel great helps you and the world.

FACULTY

Strala Trainings are all led entirely by the founders. Every member of our faculty has more than 20 years of practical experience, and between 4 and 10 years of advanced education at top-tier institutions, including Harvard, Oxford, and University of Edinburgh. Our program is credited by mind-body medicine pioneer Dr. Deepak Chopra, and Chair of Neurology at Harvard and Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Rudolph Tanzi.

Tara Stiles is the founder of Strala. Strala is practiced in more than 100 countries, and thousands of people are leading Strala in studios, gyms, and schools worldwide. Even more Strala training graduates bring what they learn to their office, team, healing practice, and across all of life. The mission we share is to help people accomplish far more, through softening and connecting with our creativity and purpose.

Tara has authored several best-selling books including Slim Calm Sexy Yoga, Yoga Cures, Make Your Own Rules Diet, Strala Yoga, and Guiding Strala, all translated and published in several languages. She has been profiled by The New York Times, Times of India, The Times (UK), and featured in most major national and international magazines. Harvard profiled Tara‘s work in a case study, and she has spoken with students at Harvard and New York University about her experience, and approaches to creativity and leadership.

Tara supports The Alliance for a Healthier Generation and the American Heart Association initiative to combat childhood obesity, as well as BOKS, which together are bringing Strala classes to more than 30,000 schools around the United States and Canada.

Tara studied classical dance with ABT Principal Rory Foster, and choreography with Paul Taylor original member and world renowned master Eileen Cropley. She is married to Strala co-founder Mike Taylor.

Mike Taylor is the resident healer and co-founder of Strala. Named “Best Mover” by MindBodyGreen, he’s practiced Eastern movement and healing techniques, including tai chi, qigong, and shiatsu, for more than three decades.

In his younger years, Mike challenged centuries of reasonable and well-tested martial traditions in hundreds of competitions, by applying unruly imagination to a world where rules were unbreakable. As he got older, he continued on to medical applications of the mind-body connection in university. Mike studied mind-body medicine at Harvard, and alternative medicine and psychology at Oxford. After running into walls with standard medical practice in the U.S. and England, Mike left his healthcare roots. He worked at a steel mill for a while, joined a web company, then founded biotech software company.

Now Mike has found his way back to health care done right, helping people let go of stress in their bodies and minds, and become their own best caregivers. Mike climbs a few mountains in his spare time, and is married to Strala founder Tara Stiles.

Sam Berlind is an Ohashiatsu teacher and practitioner living in NYC. While studying Comparative Religion and Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh in 1981, he began to practice Iyengar yoga, and continued to practice and teach yoga after moving to NYC.

Eager to learn more about the relationship between the healing properties of yoga and traditional Asian medicine, he began studying with Wataru Ohashi. Sam fell in love with shiatsu, began teaching Ohashiatsu in 1987, and lead the Ohashiatsu school in New York for 20 years.

He has since taught in NYC, Omega Institute, and throughout the US and Europe. Sam also teaches enhancement workshops and seminars based on his study of Feldenkrais Method, Gestalt therapy, Zen Shiatsu, TCM, and other modalities. His understanding of the healing arts is deeply influenced as well by his study and teaching of martial arts since 1988.

Alliances, Certification, and Work

Strala is part of the global Yoga Alliance Professionals, and they certify our 200+Hour and 300+Hour programs.

We joined this alliance because they’re working to evolve and adopt much higher standards than their American counterpart. They don’t think all trainings should have uniform generic content, led by people without much experience or practical ability. Instead, they’re looking to evolve certification that supports the best leaders in the world, to share what they know. This is important to us.

Some employers look for alliance certification, but it’s worth remembering that getting a job doesn’t have so much to do with alliances, and YA in America particularly is just a marketing organization. It’s not able to provide quality standards or exams for qualification like medical school, and unlike unions, it doesn’t provide unemployment benefits, or work assistance. So just like any kind of work, getting a job relates mostly to being excellent at what you do, and lining up well with the person who is hiring.

People are leading Strala all around the world following these trainings, in all kinds of places – including independent studios, gyms, health clubs, community centers, dance studios, apartment complexes, hotels, and even their living rooms. There are so many opportunities out there, and Strala connects especially well with a very wide range of people. This makes it easy both to find and create your own work.

Of course it takes time and practice to get really good at anything – much more than a few weeks or months of training. So long after our core time is complete, Tara and Mike remain available to help everybody keep progressing. We want everyone to be really good at this! It’s why we do what we do.

RESOURCES

We have a library of classes and trainings led by Tara and Mike that’s available online, and we add new videos pretty regularly here.

In addition, we have a Strala Online 100+Hour Leadership Training available now, that provides substantial breadth and depth for carrying this approach and practice into your life and leading. It’s a good way to prepare for or review following our intensive, Ready-to-Lead, and Advanced Leadership courses, and also gives wonderful ground for ongoing progress from wherever you are, if you’re not able to join us yet in person.

Ultimately it’s not just the certificate that matters, it’s being great at what you do. We’re here to help.

About Strala

Strala combines the movement and healing wisdom of tai chi with the form vocabularies of yoga, tai chi, qigong, and Traditional Chinese and Japanese Medicine, to help people release stress, move easily through challenge, and live radiantly inspiring lives.

It begins with a mindset, that says our best way to get where we’re going is to feel good along the way. It also works miracles for whole health, helping us to find ease in our bodies and minds, and create the right conditions both for healing and optimal performance.

In our Strala Training Courses, you learn to shape your destiny on every level that counts. The unique set of skills you develop – for connecting with yourself and others, unblocking your energy, healing what needs healing and accomplishing challenge with ease – uncovers your ability to create the life you want, and be an inspiring leader to the people around you.

QUESTIONS

If you have any questions or need something, it’s always fine to reach us directly, using Help@StralaYoga.com.

Q: If I’m taking just one or two weeks to start, which weeks should I pick?

Our program is designed so each week builds on the previous one, so that’s probably the best path to take. In Week 1, you’ll develop your ability to identify and release tension in your body and mind, moving easily through challenge with your whole self, and learning to self-diagnose and treat with your own movement – this all sets up our ability to lead, which moves into Week 2.

During Week 2, you’ll navigate through connecting, understanding, leading, and inspiring the people around you. This brings you to a place where you’re able to heal others, which moves into Week 3.

Of course, if you have a special reason to take these weeks in a different order, this is perfectly fine, just let us know.

Q: Who can join this program?

The short answer is, this program is working well for everyone, of every background.  Each of our trainings has its own unique curriculum, and you can progress in any order you like.  Everything we do is designed to help people release stress and move more easily from right where they are each day. So wherever you are is a perfect place to begin.

Strala 100+Hour Immersion and 200+Hour Training graduates. If you’ve taken a Strala 100+Hour Immersion or 200+Hour Leadership Training, you’re in a perfect place to join this Advanced Leadership Training.

Strala Intensive Training graduates. If you’ve taken a Strala Intensive Training, this program is open to you as well, and your intensive time counts toward the total practice hours.

200 and 500 Hour graduates from other schools. If you’ve trained with another school but not with Strala, this has also worked really well for everyone. And while most people complete our programs in order, from the introduction to Ready-to-Lead to Advanced Leadership, it also works just fine to progress in whatever order works best for you now.

Beginners. Everything we do is designed to help you move more easily from right where you are each day.  So right where you are is a perfect place to begin.  Just like all our trainings, this program will give you good ground for your own practice, and for sharing what you have with the people in your life.

All of our training programs provide a unique curriculum, that is different from what is covered in other 100, 200 hour, 500 hour, and advanced courses and schools. For example, our 200+Hour program provides more breadth and depth than other schools, in focus areas that include health and nutrition, injury and trauma, diagnosis, healing, and leadership. So everything you learn with Strala makes a useful addition to any previous studies.

Whether you’re interested in pursuing a teaching path, applying these concepts in your work, athletic, or healing practice, or just getting deeper into your yoga, Strala Training is a journey that will transform your inner and outer world.

Learning to move with ease in your body and life is an extremely rewarding challenge. It gives you inexhaustible energy, and tremendous physical and life ability. Best of all, it gives you a radiant, happy, and inspired you. From here, you get to support other people in finding their own way, and creating their own inspiring lives.

Q: Are there any pre-requirements for training with Strala?

A: All our trainings have  people from a wide range of backgrounds and experience.  Some people are relatively new to yoga and just want to jump in, some are long-time practicers exploring the connection between their yoga and the rest of life. Many existing yoga teachers are also bringing the ease, freedom and expansiveness of Strala into their own leading practice.  If you’re looking to teach yoga in the near-term, at least two years of practice is required.  The diversity matches well with real life, and makes great ground for training!

Q: What’s the time breakdown for your 200+Hour and 300+Hour Training?

A: Strala Trainings follow an adult-learning model, which combines structured and unstructured time, with focus on practical application. This works well for people’s learning process, and counts toward your total hours.

All contact time with our faculty adds up, above the core training hours. Some people are at the studio a great deal of time every single day, so they get more hours in a more concentrated timeframe. Some people spread their time with us over a longer period. Both approaches work fine, we’re here to support what’s best for each person.

In addition, each person will spend a good amount of time in classes, both with Tara and Mike, as well as online for people who don’t have every day with us. The online component can include our online classes, workshops, and trainings, and this is great to do before training as preparation, and after training as ongoing review.

On top of this, there are several study and practice items (outlined in the welcome material) that you can do in small groups and on your own, supported by our faculty. Some people concentrate this effort during the training, and some people begin early, and continue for several months after our core component is complete.

Strala follows a graduate school rather than grade school approach, so we’re here to support rather than police people’s time. Much more than a certificate, the point here is to become really good at what you do! This takes some ongoing time, and we remain available to help people keep developing on the right track, and specialize in the topics that are most interesting to them.

Q: What’s the difference between your longer trainings and the Intensive Trainings?

A: All Strala trainings focus on applied rather than theoretical yoga: not much time on academic study of mythology, ancient texts or languages – and substantial focus on hands-on direct work with leading, touch, health, and healing.

The main difference is we have a good deal more time in the longer trainings to cover these topics in depth. You also have a lot more time to gain competence (and confidence) through practice and feedback with the group.

If you’re looking to lead classes, or just get really into your own yoga, the longer trainings are wonderful if you have the time. If you’re wanting a good introduction to Strala’s primary elements, which you can add both to your own practice and your classes, the intensive trainings are perfect. Either way, you’ll have a great time, and get ready to lead and inspire a whole lot of people.

Q: I don’t live here, where can I stay during training?

A: All our trainings have travelers from all around the world. People have had good experiences using the sites Airbnb and VRBO for affordable short-term rentals.
