Getting Rid of What Squashes You

I hope you are about to settle into a great weekend of winding down summer and settling into your fall.

I recently handed in a project I’ve been working on for a while, and finishing up a few tail ends on other things and getting myself organized and settled so the rest of the year can unfold with ease. I took a bit of time to clean out a bunch of things in our house that needed to be done that had been literally piling up month after month. I went through it all, sorted and packaged everything to give away or recycle, and I realized, we are living in a time when the same cleanse can be done with our on-line lives. I kept looking to my computer and thinking, wow, I have a whole world in there. I bet it could use some dusting too.

For many of us, we have our real world and we have our virtual world. I love when the internet meets real life and I can connect, swap recipes and stories, hug, and practice yoga with my online friends. My on-line world has literally opened up millions of people in the world to connect and inspire each other. I’m so grateful for my internet-meets-real-life reality.

I took a look inside my virtual world and wondered what needed cleaning. There are the files and images I store. Do I really need all those drafts of all my books? Nope. Delete. Do I really need to follow all those blogs and news feeds? Nope. I started to take a look around “in there” at what really inspires me, what makes me feel spacious, and what makes me feel squashed. Anything that makes me feel squashed, I started cleaning and un-following.

I had a feeling that with lightening and brightening my on-line load, I might experience an energy boost. And it happened. The clarity you experience after a vacation, or a few days on retreat can be maintained by keeping our virtual and real life loads light. A cleanse doesn’t have to be 10 days of drinking lemon water, it can be cleaning up your virtual world.

Once you decrease the volume of unnecessary information that squashes you, room opens up for what inspires and fuels you.

3 Steps to Getting Rid of What Squashes You

1. Take a good look around. What does your desk top look like? Do you need all those thumbnails and folders on your desk top? Organize and clear out what you use and need.

2. First thing’s First. What do you look at when you first open your computer or phone and how does it make you feel? If you are scrolling FaceBook or Instagram aimlessly and feel anxious when you see your ex with a new flame, or are bombed with Instagram selfies of someone who makes you feel anxious, think about lessening your time on those feeds, and better yet, unfollow those who no longer inspire you and you are no longer connected with.

3. Make room. In order to have space you have to make room for it. Some things must go. Organize your time so you can be more efficient. If you have 2 hours to work on a project, spend your whole two hours on it, and then allow for 5 minutes of social browsing. Don’t toggle back and forth.
