Yoga injuries shouldn’t exist.
They happen when you force, push, and slam your body into a pose, and stop feeling into you.
Yoga is a practice that should heal the body and mind, not hurt it.
Too often, yoga injuries become normal, and a badge of honor on the road to a “deeper practice.” What a bummer! Of course, it doesn’t need to be this way.
As long as yoga is about getting into a pose, instead of feeling your way into yourself, injuries will happen. Sensible people who haven’t begun yoga – and see all of the yoga people injured – will stay away from yoga. How is that “yoga for everyone?” It’s just yoga for people who want to pose.
It hurts my heart to see teachers forcing contortion-like poses on people, with the ingrained idea that there is an advanced pose, and a basic one, and the goal of course is get to the advanced pose. Ouch! This kind of leading perpetuates a broken system, broken bodies, and frazzled minds.
The first rule of medicine is “Do no harm.” Somehow this doesn’t exist in the modern yoga world. Let’s change that. Let’s help each other, and the teachers of yoga, to find a little more ease and feeling in the practice, no matter what style they lead.
