Want Movability In Your Life? Put It In Your Yoga

You can use yoga to make yourself less movable, or you can use it to make you more movable.

Sometimes less movable is a good thing. Hurtling down a 50-degree angle snow slope toward a rather large drop, you want less movability. Right now!

Ice axes can help. But usually you lose. Movability is part of nature. If you’re alive, you’re movable. If you fight with nature, generally something breaks. Maybe in you, maybe in your life.

 

Usually people don’t want to be stuck. We want to be movable in our lives. But it’s not always the choice we make.

 

I notice this a lot in yoga classes. People get themselves into a bind – literally – and then try to move. Suddenly, bringing your right foot next to your left becomes a major undertaking! Hamstrings strain. Shoulders tear. What should be quite easy becomes an impassible obstacle.

 

It doesn’t matter in the least if you can’t do a yoga move. It does matter if you are straining in your body against immobility that you create. It does matter if you are straining in your life against immobility that you create. Rather than stress leaving your body, now it walks in and makes a home in you.

 

The interesting part here is, you create it. Whether it’s movability or immovability, it’s all up to you. I see people make this choice in their yoga all the time.

 

Follow the rules you think you’re supposed to follow, and you’ll find yourself pretty stuck pretty fast. Make up your own rules in your own body, you’ll find that movability is something you’ve had all along.

 

It’s your nature to be highly capable with what you’ve got. It’s your choice what to do with that.
