Touch: What Is It Good For?

“If everyone where I come from thinks touch only happens from a teacher when I’m doing something wrong, should we avoid connecting through touch?”

This came up in our online training group recently, and it’s such a good and common question.  As a start, always do what’s in you, what you’re comfortable doing. This is the most important thing.

When you’re comfortable people feel this. More is possible from here. When you’re uncomfortable, people feel this too, and less is possible.

Forming a positive connection with the people in your class – and with people in general – happens in so many ways, one of which can be touch. And of course you want a positive connection with yourself – moving well, in harmony with your whole self – first. So there’s a whole lot for all of us to work on, many many years of practice, to get really good at all of this.

Touch can be an important and useful part of connection, support, and healing. But before bringing this into class, or trying to connect out in the world with people you don’t know so well, give some attention to you. It’s good to get plenty of practice first with how you’re connecting and moving in your own body. Then carry this practice into how you’re moving and connecting with some friends and family, outside of your classes.

From here, when you connect with someone in class, or someone you don’t know so well, you’ll have a much better chance of it being a positive experience for you, and for everyone. It’s through this experience that you can begin to replace old habits and impressions – from something that doesn’t work so well – to something positive, supportive, and uplifting.

This always begins in you. And what’s in you flows inevitably out to the people around you.
