Strala combines the movement and healing wisdom of tai chi with the form vocabularies of yoga, tai chi, and Traditional Chinese and Japanese Medicine, to help people release stress, move easily through challenge, and live radiantly inspiring lives.

Strala was created by Tara Stiles, drawing on her background in classical ballet and choreography, as well as her long-time personal practice in yoga. Tara trained with Paul Taylor Dance Company choreographer and dancer Eileen Cropley, and began her yoga study in the 1990s with her ballet teacher, Rory Foster of American Ballet Theater.
The science and movement of Strala is also guided by Strala co-founder Mike Taylor. Mike studied mind-body medicine at Harvard, and complementary medicine at Oxford. He has practiced Eastern movement and healing, including tai chi and qi gong, for 30 years.
Strala 200+Hour Leadership Training:
Intuitive Movement and Healing Focus
This training gives practice and group exercise using the form vocabularies of yoga, tai chi, qigong, and shiatsu, along with discussion, writing, and communication exercises. We’ll explore the relationships among intuition, movement, and healing, with regard to ourselves and in connection with others.
Whether your focus is on recovery, self-improvement, or gaining a stronger more fulfilling practice and life, this program provides you with new practices and a process for lasting change. It’s a great training if you’re someone wanting a more connected personal practice, or are on the path of leading others to connect with their most authentic self.
About Strala Training
All our trainings have a unique curriculum that’s different from what’s covered in other 200 and 500 hour programs. So whichever course you pick, what you learn will be all new approaches, practices, and skill-sets, and makes a nice continuation from any previous studies, without any repetition.

What happens in a 200+Hour Leadership Training?
Week 1: Experience.
How to uplift and enable yourself in your yoga, your healing practices, and your life.
Week 2: Orchestrate.
How to create this experience for everyone around you.
Introduction. An overview of Being, Moving and Healing. Taking care of yourself, so you can take care of others.
Approach: 3 Elements. How to create your best yoga, through Breath, Feeling, and Natural Movement.
Breath Body Connection. Our movement is guided and fueled by our breath. Every inhale lifts and expands. Every exhale moves you further. This oceanic experience allows your body to go along for the ride, creating space for lightness and ease in your experience. We explore this connection with our self and in relation to others from a growth and healing perspective.
Feeling. Slow down and breath deep enough to feel, believe that what you feel is worth responding to, and respond. Your connection to feeling and intuition allows you to move into exactly what you need in each moment. You’ll learn to be in alignment with yourself always, and feel good every step of the way. We’ll explore through various individual and group exercises through the vocabularies of yoga, tai chi, qigong, and shiatsu. We’ll dive in deeper with our themes of intuitive movement and healing with various writing exercises and group discussion.
Process: The Principles of Movement. How to accomplish far more, with far less effort, in everything you do. We begin with our breath, connect to our feeling, and move from our middle. We’ll replace force and struggle with grace and coordination. With easy, natural movements, we can progress far beyond pose goals, and dive into the process of getting to know our bodies and minds. We’ll focus on moving well to drop bad habits, form new, good and powerful connections with our selves and those around us.
Practice: Hard Things Easy. It’s possible to get where you want to go by learning to drop the stress, and move easily through challenge. In fact, it’s not just possible. The best among us – the most inspirational of any human effort – has been achieved in this way. Nothing truly great has ever been achieved by working harder than needed. The impossible becomes possible only when we move gracefully, when we choose peace over aggression.
We’ll replace the self-limiting myth of no pain no gain, release stress and struggle from our bodies and minds, and use the principles of natural movement to make the impossible possible. This becomes your way of being. It becomes how you move, how you create yourself, and the world around you.
Guiding: how to create an uplifting and enabling experience. Your first responsibility is to take really good care of yourself. What you have for yourself is what you have to give to others. From here, we move through the best ways to orchestrate an amazing experience for everyone around you. You’ll learn to lead people into their own freedom, intuition, creativity, and radiantly good health.
Experiential Anatomy. When you know what you’ve got, you can become inspiringly good at using it. Our anatomy training connects you directly to the experience of your own structure and physiology, and teaches you to create this connection also with others. From here, you learn to lead people effectively on a natural level. You also learn to diagnose and heal what needs healing, in yourself and others.
Healing: Touch and Support. How to create a supportive, enabling, and healing relationship with yourself, and with others. We’ll detail the core principles of safety, alignment, and practical anatomy, and provide an effective approach for healing of both acute injury and chronic pain.
Stress, Health & Nutrition. We’ll explore your mind-body connection, the role of stress in disease, and techniques for releasing stress and activating your body’s Relaxation Response. We’ll also explore the microbiome, and various nutritional strategies for curing ailments and enabling optimal health. We’ll dive deeper into the healing art of shiatsu beginning with making a good connection with our self to make a good connection with others.
Leadership, Work, Life. We’ll carry our practice of being, moving and healing into how you create the life you want. We will engage in writing exercises and group discussion around intuition, creativity and leadership.
Whatever goals you might have, how you feel when you get there is created by how you are along the way. In yoga, this is why challenges like handstands are best achieved not by practicing handstands – but by learning to move easily and comfortably in your body, through everything you do. Of course you can take a handstand by force – jumping and crashing, using muscle rather than coordination and grace. But this will never feel good. And the goal will lack meaning. We’ll have learned only to reach our goals by force, by not feeling good.
So of course there’s a better way, moving with grace and coordination, rather than by force and struggle. We learn something valuable about ourselves, moving this way. We learn that we can accomplish much more in our lives without stress and struggle than with it. We learn that we can get to wherever we want from wherever we are. And we learn that we can feel good, always. It’s not about the handstand. It’s how you get where you’re going that creates what you have.
More Practice. All of our trainings are very practical. We’re not just talking about all of this – we’re going to do it together. So we have plenty of real class time for practice, exploration, and making what you want real in your everyday life. Wherever you are in your wellbeing journey, you are ready to expand, grow and connect from here. We are prepared to meet you where you are and help you connect with a lasting process for growth and change and enjoy every moment along the way.
Curriculum Details & Time Outline
The Strala Core Curriculum includes focus on both direct experience, and orchestration of that experience.
1) Experience. Movement, breath, meditation, sensitivity, feeling, experiential anatomy, alignment, exploration, safety, health, nutrition, injuries, healing, spirituality, and history.
2) Orchestration. Guiding feeling, movement, breath, poses, alignment, exploration, touch and support, practical anatomy and physiology, safety, injuries, healing, health, nutrition, language, voice, sequence, pace, music, position, body language, and attitude.
The Strala Specialized Curriculum includes approaches for
- Adults and children
- Athletes, strength, agility and endurance
- Flexibility, mobility and stability

- Physical therapy to restore optimal balance between strength and flexbility, stability and mobility; healing for injuries, chronic pain, and stress-associated ailments

- Activating an internal experience that creates a radiant body, mind and life, across everything you do.
At least 180 training hours are spent learning and practicing with our faculty. Every member of our faculty has more than 20 years of practical experience, and between 4 and 10 years of advanced education at top-tier institutions, including Harvard, Oxford, and University of Edinburgh.
Outside of Intensive Hours other assignments can be done in your own time. Stay easy and have persistence and patience with yourself, and you’ll accomplish it all and more.
We follow an adult learning process that supports everyone learning in their own way, at their own pace. We don’t tend to force or police things like exams, extra study time, or extra practice time. These elements are all available throughout our learning process, and we’re here for each person, to guide in the way that’s best for them.
Much more than a certificate, the point here is to become really good at what you do. This takes some ongoing time, and we remain available to help people keep developing on the right track, and specialize in the topics that are most interesting to them.

From here, you’ll learn to understand and lead a Strala experience from the ground up, whether it’s in a class, at your work, or in whatever you share with the people in your life.
You’ll discover our Vocabulary of Movement, designed to harness your breath-body connection, and get you moving easily and naturally from the inside-out. We’ll explore sequencing, pace, flow, psychology, language and music. You’ll learn how to create space, to support positive connection, healing, and inspirational accomplishment. Why does Strala feel so special?
We get asked this one a lot. Mostly we talk about how it feels great. People get happy! They get super-healthy. They make their own rules, and their own yoga. They make their own incredibly inspiring lives.

Tara studied classical dance with ABT Principal Rory Foster, and choreography with Paul Taylor original member and world renowned master Eileen Cropley. She is married to Strala co-founder Mike Taylor.
Mike Taylor is the resident healer and co-founder of Strala. Named “Best Mover” by MindBodyGreen, he’s practiced Eastern movement and healing techniques, including tai chi, qigong, and shiatsu, for more than three decades.
In his younger years, Mike challenged centuries of reasonable and well-tested martial traditions in hundreds of competitions, by applying unruly imagination to a world where rules were unbreakable. As he got older, he continued on to medical applications of the mind-body connection in university. Mike studied mind-body medicine at Harvard, and alternative medicine and psychology at Oxford. After running into walls with standard medical practice in the U.S. and England, Mike left his healthcare roots. He worked at a steel mill for a while, joined a web company, then founded biotech software company.
Now Mike has found his way back to health care done right, helping people let go of stress in their bodies and minds, and become their own best caregivers. Mike climbs a few mountains in his spare time, and is married to Strala co-founder Tara Stiles.
Sam Berlind is a shiatsu teacher and practitioner living in NYC. While studying Comparative Religion and Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh in 1981, he began to practice Iyengar yoga, and continued to practice and teach yoga after moving to NYC.
Eager to learn more about the relationship between the healing properties of yoga and traditional Asian medicine, he began studying with Wataru Ohashi. Sam fell in love with shiatsu, began teaching Ohashiatsu in 1987, and lead the Ohashiatsu school in New York for 20 years.
He has since taught in NYC, Omega Institute, and throughout the US and Europe. Sam also teaches enhancement workshops and seminars based on his study of Feldenkrais Method, Gestalt therapy, Zen Shiatsu, TCM, and other modalities. His understanding of the healing arts is deeply influenced as well by his study and teaching of martial arts since 1988.

All of our trainings have people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experience. Some are relative beginners, some are long-time practicers and teachers. Some want to teach, and some want to progress with their own yoga. If you’re looking to teach yoga professionally, of course it’s good to have at least two years of your own practice experience first. Wherever you are now is a great place to begin. We’re lucky to have this rich diversity, it makes wonderful ground for real-world learning.

Strala guides how you move, grounded in the wisdom of tai chi, and the older East Asian martial and healing arts, all of which teach movement as the starting point. How you become you.
This shifts focus from needing to fuss and fix alignment in poses, trying to copy a correct form, then moving any way you can to get to the next pose. Which creates more problems to fix.

Q: When and where are Strala trainings?
Q: Are there any pre-requirements for training with Strala?
A: All our trainings have people from a wide range of backgrounds and experience. Some people are relatively new to yoga and just want to jump in, some are long-time practicers exploring the connection between their yoga and the rest of life. Many existing yoga teachers are also bringing the ease, freedom and expansiveness of Strala into their own leading practice. If you’re looking to teach yoga in the near-term, at least two years of practice is required. The diversity matches well with real life, and makes great ground for training!
Q: What’s the time breakdown for your 200+Hour Training?
A: Strala Trainings follow an adult-learning model, which combines structured and unstructured time, with focus on practical application. This works well for people’s learning process, and counts toward your 200+hours.
All contact time with our faculty adds up, above the core training hours. Some people are at the studio a great deal of time every single day, so they get more hours in a more concentrated timeframe. Some people spread their time with us over a longer period. Both approaches work fine, we’re here to support what’s best for each person.
In addition, each person will spend a good amount of time in classes, both with Tara and Mike, as well as online for people who don’t have every day with us. The online component can include our classes, workshops, and trainings, and this is great to do before training as preparation, and after training as ongoing review.
On top of this, there are several study and practice items (outlined in the welcome material) that you can do in small groups and on your own, supported by our faculty. Some people concentrate this effort during the training, and some people begin early, and continue for several months after our core component is complete.
Strala follows a graduate school rather than grade school approach, so we’re here to support rather than police people’s time. Much more than a certificate, the point here is to become really good at what you do! This takes some ongoing time, and we remain available to help people keep developing on the right track, and specialize in the topics that are most interesting to them.
Q: What’s the difference between your longer training and the 2-day intensive?
A: All our trainings focus on applied rather than theoretical yoga: not much time on academic study of mythology, ancient texts or languages – and substantial focus on hands-on direct work with leading, touch, health, and healing. Both trainings cover the same general topics.
The main difference is we have a good deal more time in the longer training to cover these topics in depth. You also have a lot more time to gain competence (and confidence) through practice and feedback with the group.
If you’re looking to lead classes, or just get really into your own yoga, the longer trainings are wonderful if you have the time. If you’re wanting a good introduction to Strala’s primary elements, which you can add both to your own practice and your classes, the intensive trainings are perfect. Either way, you’ll have a great time, and get ready to lead and inspire a whole lot of people.
