Building a Yoga and Tai Chi Practice that Creates Peace
There’s this wonderful old Chinese philosophy we practice now in tai chi. It holds an understanding that bigger always wins in a contest of force, and this is the least interesting of contests. So we change it to something more interesting, more peaceful. Something where force doesn’t win, it simply tires itself out from lack of balance.
If Bigger Always Wins, Change the Contest
This philosophy found expression many hundreds of years ago, in a time and place of more need, and less choice. But we don’t have to wait. We can choose, from wherever we happen to be, right now. Because we know it can create a better world. Better communities, companies, governments. And more immediately, it can create a better you. Strong, sustainable, easeful, peaceful, fully you.
Learn to choose peace because you want to, not because you have to.
For most of human history, we only choose peace when we have to. Governments, companies, communities, people, all the same. All reflecting what’s in every one of us. Powerful China was not always so powerful, and peaceful Tibet, not always so peaceful. There was a time when these roles were reversed.
What Does Practicing Peace Look Like
What does this look like in practice? You’ll find it in every step of the ancient arts of qigong and tai chi, calligraphy and dish washing. You can put it in your yoga, your walking, your climbing or running, meeting and connecting with other humans.
It simply means letting go the stress and tension that depletes and blocks your natural flow of energy. It means reconnecting all your disconnected parts into one harmoniously functioning you. It means choosing this process of connection and peace, every time you run into a roadblock and face the immediate option of isolation and force.
Nothing ever hurts, heals, or prospers in isolation from itself, or from the world around it. So this is an important choice to make. And it’s one you’re making in every moment of your life.
