Do You Have Enough Space

Hi Friends,

We all feel great when we have space for ourselves. Room to breathe, feel, think, and exist. When we lack that space we get cramped, boxed in, and form destructive habits to provide the temporary illusion of space. We can’t escape our need for space, but we can change how we create and sustain room for ourselves that enables a happy, healthy, life.

You are a space maker. Every big inhale you take in creates space and room inside your body and mind. Each exhale you release, moves you right in. The deeper you breathe the more space opens up, and the more you practice the better you feel.

A good friend and mentor recently clued me in about toggle time. Left to my own tendencies, I’ll pack in activities and events all day long until the end of my time, because that feels productive to me, but I learned a big lesson here. Essentially space between packed together activities burns energy and space in our minds shrinks in the toggle. What I thought was plenty of time between things turns out to be a smaller boxed in space. Space in time shrinks and expands in relation to the toggle.

Energy in the toggle gets sucked away into a vacum. We can gain it back and then some by letting go of those commitments that we have in our schedules that aren’t leading us to our goals, but are there essentially to keep ourselves busy.

Do You Have Enough Space in Your Life?

I am super guilty of filling my schedule with many things in order to feel busy, when many of those things aren’t even heading me in the direction of my passion or goals. It initially caused some unrest in me to have space, when I know I could be doing this or that, be working on this or that, be meeting with this person or that person, but what is the point really? When I ask myself, “Is this meeting going to lead me in the direction of my goal? and the answer is Nope, I have a much easier time saying, no thanks.

When I first moved to NYC I filled my time with a lot of different activities and am happy I did because all those experiences brought me to where I am today. I danced on stilts, modeled, did a lof of TV commercials, taught yoga privately and in Central Park, and rode a skateboard around town to and from a lot of those adventures. My goal was to figure out what I wanted to do and build out a life for myself.

My life now has brought to the surface a lot of amazing dreams and desires and I am careful to spend time enjoying the people and the process around me without squashing everything and everyone, including myself with an attempt to stretch time resulting in smashing space.

The fun part comes in when people around me started noticing a difference in how I felt to them, more available, more calm, more open, more sensitive, and more creative. This Creating Space stuff really works!

5 Steps to Making Space & Having Endless Creativity

1. Recognize the value in having more space in your life.

2. Look at your schedule for the day, week, month, year, and 5 years. Drop what’s not moving you in the direction of your goals

3. Don’t worry about what you are going to do with all that extra time.

4. Plan activities that fuel your creativity and passion but aren’t necessarily work. Swim in the ocean, take a walk in nature, go to the museum. I bet you can make a big list!

5. Resist filling your schedule back up when you have the opportunity. Soak up the new space in your life and use that energy to move toward your goals.

How are you at Creating Space? Do you have any tips or tricks to share? Would love to hear about your adventures in the comments.
