Ask Strala: Will my yoga suffer for lack of ancient texts?

Question

It seems like people around my yoga studio are always talking some ancient text or the other, from the Sutras to the Gita.  They call these books “sacred.” I’m an avid reader, but I’ve never been much into mythology. Am I missing something here?

 

Answer

I haven’t seen a correlation between study of ancient texts or languages, and the ability to feel great and live a capable life.

Around Strala, we don’t see ancient texts as sacred; we see you as sacred!  If you see something outside you as sacred, you’ll following something outside you.  If you see you as sacred, you follow you.

But you’re not alone in what you’re hearing. Most yoga schools spend a great deal of time studying ancient languages and mythology, along with detailed rules on how to live. At Strala, we’d rather keep the focus on you – right here, right now – discovering and developing what’s inside you, which is what you have to give. This can be more challenging, and at times less comforting, than having someone else just tell us what to do. But, it’s also more applicable to creating your own capable life, on your own two feet.

 

If you find old books interesting, that’s great. If you don’t, that’s also great. You should do what you like. That’s your yoga. Getting sensitive to you, what you like, and doing exactly that.

 

Over the ages, several guys have written about some direct experiences they’ve had of themselves.

What’s important isn’t what they wrote or what steps they took, although stories can be fun and historical study interesting.  Those steps were their own steps, in their own time, on their own feet.

What’s important is that some guys had direct experiences of themselves. And those experiences inspired them.

 

If you believe you’re a capable person, you’ll know that you can also directly experience yourself. You can also get inspired. You can also inspire others.

 

If you don’t believe you’re capable, you’ll think the best you can do is study what other people did, and try to copy it.

 

The thing is, that won’t get you too far.

The other thing is, you are capable.

 

Believe it. And make your own yoga!
