What We are Here to Do

Hello Good Friends,

When I was a little kid I would go off to the woods, sit in trees, breathe deeply and do what I now know as meditation, naturally. When I closed my eyes and followed my breath, I would see super bright colors swirling around like a dance performance of energy and vibrancy. I intuitively knew that everything is connected, and we are here to help each other, and take care of each other.

I’ll be honest with you. That sense of space gets filled up when you grow up. Schedules, goals, work load, families, oh my! I know you know what I’m talking about. We are all so busy and although I am grateful for everything my adventures have brought me so far in my life, I have a strong intuitive sense it’s important to find that space inside again.

We are here to take care of each other.

I’m letting it be my mantra these days and it goes both ways. Take care of others and let others take care of you. When you experience this connectedness with friends, family, co-workers, and even strangers, you are in the flow of your life. Things happen easily, struggle doesn’t exist, and synchronicity happens from moment to moment.

A few years ago I was walking uptown NYC to a meeting, texting on my phone (p.s. Don’t do this!) and veered from the sidewalk into the street to pass up some slow walkers. As I stepped off the curb, someone grabbed the back of my shirt and pulled me back onto the sidewalk just as a bus wizzed by where I almost landed. This stranger probably saved my life, and simply continued about their day like it was no thing at all. I took this as my lesson not to text and walk and always walk with my phone in my bag or pocket, never looking at it. Also I keep my eyes peeled for anyone who may be in a similar danger who might need me to yank them out of harms way. When things are imbalanced, well…you are out of the flow. Good thing about being out of the flow is you can always chose to slide right back in.

The balance doesn’t work if you favor one or the other. If you spend most of your time taking care of others and forgetting about yourself, you might be seen as a giver, but you can give much more when you take care of yourself first. If you are mainly interested in your self, your own desires, dreams and goals, you will cause a drain on others, might end up with temporary gain, but ultimately isolated and it will be harder to find those who want to help.

Homework!

Step 1. Chose a simple activity that helps you take care of you. Let it be simple, (shopping sprees don’t count!) Take a long walk, start a knitting project, read a good book, or take a bath.

Step 2. Chose a simple activity that helps take care of someone else. Give a friend or a loved one a back rub, take a friend out for tea and ask them loads of questions about how they are doing in their life and just listen, or call an old friend for no reason other than just to catch up.

Step 3. Share what you are doing for yourself and others in the comments below.

Now I’m off to take a bath, start a knitting project, and make a date with a friend. How about you?
